Photopea is a fully fledged image editor that runs in your browser. It mirrors the Photoshop mental model: layers, masks, blend modes, adjustment layers, vector shapes, text. Opens and saves PSD, XCF, Sketch, SVG, PDF, PNG, and exports web formats. Keyboard shortcuts mostly familiar.
Why it works
Because it’s fast to start, nothing to install or sign up. Files are processed locally in the tab, so you keep control. It’s perfect for quick comps, social assets, and fixing that cursed PSD your client sent at 2 a.m.
Money and model
Free with ads; pay a few bucks to ditch them and get a longer history. No lock-in: you can round-trip PSDs without screaming. Solid privacy posture since processing is client-side.
The trade-offs
It’s still a browser app. Giant multi-gigabyte files and heavy smart filters will crawl. No cloud collaboration, fewer high-end print and 3D workflows, and the UI can feel cramped on small screens. But for most web work, it punches above its weight.
