What is Airtable?

Airtable combines spreadsheets and databases, offers templates, views and automations, integrates via API and apps, supports real-time collaboration, web and mobile, free and paid plans.

Airtable

Spreadsheet with a database spine

Airtable sells the fantasy that your messy spreadsheet can be a structured system. It mixes tables, linked records, and views so you can treat rows like real objects—not fragile cells. Feels familiar, behaves smarter.

Build without shipping code

You can bolt on forms, automations, and interfaces to turn a backlog into a workflow. Kanban, calendar, gallery, Gantt—switch views and keep the data intact. The Interface Designer makes lightweight dashboards that don’t require a developer.

The catches

Power scales quickly, and so does price. Permissioning is fussy, cross-base relationships are awkward, and serious relational logic still hits walls. Big teams will end up wrangling governance as much as data.

Good fit

Product ops, marketing, content, and anyone drowning in Google Sheets. If you need a real database, use one. If you need a flexible system your team will actually touch, Airtable is a pragmatic compromise.

What features and use cases does Airtable offer?

  • Spreadsheet-style relational database with customizable field types (attachments, selects, formulas, rollups)
  • Multiple flexible views (grid, Kanban, calendar, timeline/Gantt, gallery, form) to visualize and collect data
  • Built-in automations and no-code workflows (triggers, actions, webhooks) plus scripting for advanced logic
  • Integrations and data sync (REST API, Slack/Google/Zapier connectors, CSV import/export, cross-base sync)
  • Collaborative workspaces with permissions, real-time editing, comments, and revision history
  • Dashboards and Interfaces (Interface Designer, extensions) for reporting, charts, and tailored apps
  • Suitable for project tracking, CRM/pipelines, content planning, inventory/asset management
